Podcast 30 Fear, Afraid, Scared, & Scary

Hi Blabbinit members and guests! This is Missy coming to you from Southern California. Today I would like to go over a few words related to "fear". I would like to explain different examples to you so that you are able to understand more clearly which word to use in which sentence.

There are a few words that we use. They are: fear, afraid, scared, and scary.

With the word fear, we can use it as a verb and also as a noun. I will show you some examples of how it is used as a verb first.

He fears for his life because he thinks his dad will kill him after he sees the bad grade.
Another example is: They fear for their safety when Ronny drives because he is a maniac driver!

Fear can also be used as a noun. Here are some examples:
I have a fear of crocodiles since one bit my little brother last year.
or
The fear of sharks is stupid since they don't really bite often.

Another word we use to express fear is "afraid". Afraid is the feeling that someone has when they fear something.

I will give a few examples of how we use this word.
Don't be afraid, the earthquake is over.
I am afraid of you because you are a dangerous person.
She is afraid of falling off of the mountain.

There is another word that we use which expresses how something looks or makes us feel about it. This word is "scary".

I will illustrate how this word is used with the following examples:
That vampire in the house is very scary because it wants to suck my blood!
The big dog is scary when it shows its teeth.

The last word that I will explain is scared. It is the fear of something.

Some example sentences are:

I am scared of jumping out of an airplane since I could die.
I am scared to speak German with your family because I might say something wrong and not know it.
Have you ever been scared of the dark?
