Download podcast

Hello everybody and welcome to Blabbinit. This is Missy. Today I would like to explain some phrasal verbs. I have quiet a few friends learning English and they say that the phrasal verbs are one of the hardest parts of English.

Adding a preposition such as "in", "out" or "up" to a verb can absolutely change the whole meaning of the verb. Let's go over four phrasal verbs with example sentences so that you can memorize more. The more you have memorized, the easier it will be.

Okay, let's start.
The first phrasal verb is:
"look up" which means to search and find something.
Two example sentences are:
-I will look up your order tomorrow when I get to work.
and - I looked up his phone number in the phone book.
The next phrasal verb is:
"run by" which means to explain some information to someone.
Two example sentences are:
-I need to run the price by you before you buy it.
and - He ran by all of the reports with his boss before turning them in.

The third phrasal verb is:
"act out" which means to behave in a bad way.
Two example sentences are:
- My son really acted out at the wedding and embarrassed me.
and - Tom acted out at work right in front of his boss.

The fourth phrasal verb is:
"jump in" which means to participate or get involved in something.
Two example sentences are:
- Hurry and go jump in the basketball game.
and - Bill jumped in on the business deal at the last minute and now he is rich!

Hopefully these phrasal verbs with examples have helped you and have made it easier to understand. Keep practicing and you will learn them little by little. One day you will look back and see how far you have come in the learning process.
